SPRING LAKE PARK, Minn. — A bus accident killed a Minnesota mother of four and pastor’s wife who was on vacation in the Caribbean with her daughter.

Crystal Glewwe, 32, of Ham Lake was on a special mother-daughter cruise with her eldest daughter, Kayden, 9, when it happened.

Family members said Thursday afternoon, a dump truck lost control and crashed into their tour bus in Jamaica causing a four-car pile up. Crystal’s mother, Mary Carlson, said the pair had been at a nearby beach swimming and were traveling back to the cruise ship when it happened. Jamaican news sites reported at least 20 people were injured in the crash that took place in Trelawny.

Crystal was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. According to Carlson, Kayden broke her collarbone and required surgery. Rick Glewwe, Crystal’s husband and Kayden’s father, was able to fly to Jamaica and bring Kayden home Saturday night.

Carlson described her daughter as a “godly woman” who “loved to be a mom.”

“Oh this has rocked our church in such a heavy way,” said Peter Haas, lead pastor at Substance Church.

Rick Glewwe is Substance Church’s family ministries pastor and oversees their youth and kids ministries at all the church’s locations (Minneapolis and Spring Lake Park).

According to Haas, Crystal had been with the church from the beginning before it even launched 11 years ago.

“They’ve done so many good things for so many people, every single Sunday. Crystal was out there just welcoming kids into our kids ministry and thousands of families really felt welcomed because Rick and Crystal were some of the first faces to really welcome a lot of the people into our church community,” Pastor Haas said.

The church just moved into their Spring Lake Park location and had planned on cleaning the space on Saturday. They cancelled those plans and spent the day praying for the Glewwe family.

Crystal is survived by her husband and four kids: Kayden, 9; Taylor, 6; Faith, 4 and son Bailey, 20 months.

“My biggest concern has been for the four kids and Rick and just making sure that we really take care of them,” Pastor Haas said.

A memorial fund will be set up in the next few days. KARE 11 will post the information as it becomes available.
