Millions of Cubans gather for traditional May Day parades

From Caribbean News Now

HAVANA, Cuba — Millions of Cubans gathered on Monday for the traditional May Day parades. Cuban President Raul Castro presided over the huge May Day march at Havana’s Revolution Square, along with Communist Party Politburo members.

Raul Castro was accompanied by leaders of grassroots organizations, and some 1,690 representatives from 349 workers unions from 89 countries, and other Cuban groups.

The main May Day speech was delivered by Ulises Gilarte, secretary-general of the Cuban Workers Federation (CTC by its Spanish acronym) who expressed Cuba’s support of embattled Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

He said Cuba supports Maduro’s government in its fight to defend Venezuela’s sovereignty, independence and the values of the Bolivarian Revolution.

Gilarte also demanded the immediate lifting of the over 50-year long US embargo of Cuba.

He said there is a very complex international situation and the challenges and dangers for Latin America and the Caribbean are growing, therefore more unity among the people of the region is needed.
