Khadija Shaw and Alphonso Davies named 2022 Concacaf Players of the Year

Miami, FL (Friday, May 5, 2023) – Concacaf has announced that Khadija Shaw and Alphonso Davies have been named 2022 Concacaf Women’s and Men’s Players of the Year, respectively.

Concacaf’s official player awards program saw Shaw and Davies selected based on a football-first voting system, which included the participation of coaches and players from Concacaf Member Associations, as well as media members from our region and fans.

More details on the voting process, which was introduced for 2021, are available here.

Khadija Shaw (JAM) | Manchester City FC (ENG)

Shaw is the first Caribbean player to win the Concacaf Women’s Player of the Year honor. Four years after helping Jamaica become the first-ever Caribbean nation to qualify for a FIFA Women’s World Cup, the Jamaican FW played a huge role in helping the Reggae Girlz qualify for their second straight Women’s World Cup. In the 2022 Concacaf Women’s Championship (CWC) in Monterrey, Shaw scored three goals, including the game-winning score in the opening 1-0 win versus Mexico and a brace in the 4-0 victory against Haiti, which sealed Jamaica’s Women’s World Cup qualification. For her efforts, Shaw was named to the 2022 CWC Best XI.

At club level with Manchester City in England, Shaw was equally prolific. During the calendar year 2022, she scored 15 goals in 19 Women’s Super League games, seven goals in eight domestic cup games (Women’s FA Cup and FA Women’s League Cup), and two goals in two UEFA Women’s Champions League games. Shaw’s three goals in the knockout stage helped Manchester City claim the 2021-22 FA Women’s League Cup.

Alphonso Davies (CAN) | FC Bayern Munich (GER)

It is the second consecutive year in which Davies has captured the Concacaf Player of the Year award. He is the first player to win this prestigious award in successive years, and joins Costa Rica GK Keylor Navas (2014, 2017) as the only two-time winner. After playing a key role in Canada’s qualification to the FIFA World Cup 2022,  Davies entered the Canada Soccer record books when he scored the first ever Canada goal at a Senior Men’s World Cup when he struck a first-half header against Croatia in Qatar.

The left back delivered another strong year at club level, too, with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich. During the calendar year, he appeared in 18 league matches, plus two domestic cup games in helping Bayern win the 2021-22 Bundesliga and the 2022 German Super Cup. In European competition, he played in seven UEFA Champions League matches, the latter five coming in the group stage of the 2022-23 edition.
