Following the life of JL Hurlston, readers can see the rapid progress of the Cayman Islands as a society and as a premier destination, told in the voice of one of its best-loved residents.

Mr. Johnson, later Sir Vassel, sent back a message to invite me to come and see him on my arrival. I did, and was offered an immediate opportunity to start in the civil service as a temporary clerk, which I did on 8 July 1968. The starting salary was 34 pounds per month. Humble beginnings can open the door for success…” Humble indeed were the beginnings of JL Hurlston. Splitting his youth between Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, Hurlston found his anchor in life in two things—his family and his Christian faith, both of which molded his experiences as a Civil Servant and the impact he made on the lives of ordinary Caymanians. With his wife at his side, Hurlston began his Civil Service career at the bottom, ready to climb to heights not even he could imagine at the time.

A reformer of strong Christian ethics, the strides in Hurlston’s life never came easily to him, but through faith and hard work—that most trustworthy of combinations—Hurlston walked his way right into Caymanian history, leaving great improvements, and many humorous stories, in his wake. A Life That Counts combines genres as joyful memoir and lovingly crafted history book, acting as both a testament to his life and the beauty of the Cayman Islands.
