Jamaica: BRT Weekend Festival promoter strategizes on new execution plan despite COVID-19

The organizers of Beach Road Trip Weekend drafted a COVID- 19 safety- plan in preparation for the permissible of event concerts and festivals. Their strategy focuses the implementation of protection measures including onsite COVID-19 screening by health professionals, disinfectant equipment and areas, revised check-in and bar service procedures, increasing security personnel, and strongly enforcing the wearing of masks. 

Researchers around the globe are studying events and labelling them as “super-spreaders” for coronavirus. Thus, festivals, concerts, and other large-scaled gatherings are cancelled or postponed. BRT Weekend, the 3-day music festival tour was slated to take place in March was the first major event to postpone its plan, even before Jamaica’s government made the ban for all public gatherings and the stay-at-home order. The organizers, their executive body, and public health advisors made the festival’s postponement announcement just days before event start date. Over 3,000 pre-sold ticket holders were ready to enjoy Jamaica. To date, the team has met countless of times to discuss the global trends of the COVID-19, the backlash it has on festivals, and the possible resurrection of tourism.

BRT Weekend created and shared their COVID-19 prevention proposal with Jamaica’s health officials, St. Ann’s police department, Urban Development Corporation personnel, and other government officials to consider. The proposal was also disseminated to health officials in cities where the 2019 BRT Weekend was scheduled.  The company wants to help governments to consider of ways to collaborate with event organizers and rejuvenate Jamaica’s tourism.
