Is It Worth It: Being A Translator In the 21st Century?

By Elizabeth Baldridge

Translation has always been an attachment of world culture to the national language. After all, the myth of the Tower of Babel is a precautionary myth, a story about the punishment of mankind for its inherent desire to be equal to God. It is perfectly possible to understand the cultural centers of countries: they are interested in the commercial success of their book in another national literary market. If the book is sold, both the author and the tax system of this country will receive their royalties. Instead, it’s harder when the authors are gone. But does this mean that their works should not enter the treasury of other literature? Let’s understand who a translator is.

H2: Should We Fight The Progress?

Now the translator is at the center of the processes of globalization, internationalization, and localization of the language product. In addition to classical interpreters and translators, we need a translator who knows how to organize and manage the translation process, develop language strategies, know how to use translation software, and effectively integrate it at different stages of the translation process.

The need for translation as a type of information activity is growing every year, so it is important today to find rational ways to solve the problem of fast and significant translation. However, do not forget about the basic translation requirements.

  • the translation must convey the content of the original;
  • the translation must comply with language standards;
  • the translation must be equal to the original in volume.

When using machine translation, it is often impossible to meet these requirements and editing is a mandatory step in translation. You should try a translation service provider to find it out. This is due to the imperfection of machine translation systems.

  • the presence of untranslated words;
  • stylistic and grammatical errors.

Machine translation is not perfect, but the document can be corrected with knowledge of a foreign language and focusing on the subject of translation. Interesting and helpful is the knowledge base for translators. The quality of machine translation has improved. However, there are problems with grammatical and syntactic connections in the sentence, with the reproduction of terminology. Due to the imagery and stylistic load of fiction, automatic translation of such texts is impossible. The criteria by which software products for translation are compared.

  • translation speed;
  • the number of untranslated words or dictionaries that accompany machine translation programs;
  • the quality of the translation determines the grammatical correctness of the translation;
  • user interface friendliness;
  • network use;
  • work with Web-browser.

Most often, machine translation is used when translating documents, instructions, e-mails, pages from the Internet (Web-pages). Another application of the systems is to facilitate the routine work of translators, performing line-by-line translation for them, which can be easily corrected. Many scholars are working to solve the problems of automatic translation. The computer does not understand the nuances of language, hints in the text, what is called a subtle play on words. He is not able to fully understand the content of the text. When machine translation of a sentence is divided into parts of speech, it distinguishes standard constructions, words, and phrases that are translated by dictionaries in the memory of the machine. Then the translated parts of speech are collected according to the rules of another language into a sentence.

H2: Computer vs. Translator

n the 21st century, the century of science and computer science, machine translation is becoming a special and effective means of interlingual communication in all fields of modern science and technology. The advent of machine translation can and should be considered an active assistant, not a competitor in translation. Therefore, a computer cannot replace an interpreter. However, despite the limitations of the quality of the source text, machine translation really facilitates the daily translation work, speeds up, and improves the traditional translation process.
