3rd Zika case confirmed in Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands Health Department have confirmed a third imported case of Zika.

Acting Medical Officer of Health Samuel Williams-Rodriguez said the patient, a 30 year old female. had travelled to a country in the region where the Zika virus has been transmitted,between 11 and 19 June.

Four more cases are currently being investigated for Zika, dengue and chikungunya.

 

Cayman Islands police make 35 arrests during extremely busy weekend

From last Friday, 15 July, through this morning, 18 July, police made 35 arrests for various criminal and traffic offenses, attended motor vehicle collisions, executed warrants, and answered 254 of the 305 calls for service dispatched by the 9-1-1 Communications Centre. Of these arrests six were drug-related, three were for burglary, three for assault, and six were for driving under the influence (DUI) resulting from traffic operations executed around the island. Twenty of the arrests occurred on Friday alone. Some of this police activity is described below.

Coordinated work by Bodden Town CID detectives and Scenes of Crime Officers led to the arrest of a male juvenile, age 16, of Bodden Town last Friday, 15 July, on suspicion of six burglaries in Bodden Town in recent weeks. The juvenile is in police custody.

Also last Friday a man, age 38, of West Bay, was charged with Burglary and Handling Stolen Goods in connection with a burglary that occurred on 11 July in Snug Harbour. The man has been in Police Custody and will be in court today.

On Friday evening around 8PM, Bodden Town officers, K-9 and Uniform Support Group conducted a proactive drug operation at an address in Savannah during which a quantity of ganja was recovered. A woman, age 22, of George Town, and a man, age 25, of Bodden Town, were arrested on suspicion of Possession of Ganja, Consumption, and other drug-related offences. They are on Police Bail.

Early Saturday morning, 16 July, at about 2AM, a quantity of ganja was recovered and three people were arrested on suspicion of Importation of Ganja in connection with a canoe that had come ashore in Prospect. The three people, a woman, age 33, of West Bay, a man, age 22 of Bodden Town, and a man, age 22, of West Bay, are currently on Police Bail.

Just after 9AM on Saturday morning, uniform officers responded to a serious and violent domestic incident in West Bay, during which a man in possession of a knife and machete had assaulted a woman, who was bleeding profusely from her injuries. Officers quickly defused the situation after arriving, restrained the man and provided First Aid to the woman, who was taken to the hospital. The man, age 24, of George Town, was arrested and has been charged with Possession of an Offensive Weapon (two counts) and Wounding. He is in court today.

 

Cuban migrants in transit from Cayman Brac

A total of 26 migrants arrived in Cayman Brac on Saturday evening and departed early Sunday morning. This group comprised of 23 males and 3 females. All persons on board appeared to have been in good health and no one disembarked from the vessel.

 

CAYMAN ISLANDS IMMIGRATION DEPARTMENT CLOSURE ON 5 August 2016

The Department of Immigration Headquarters, including Passport & Corporate Services, Visa Office and Front Counter, will be closed to the public for all but essential services on Friday 5, August 2016. Only work permit and permanent residence applications (including applications for permission to continue to work (PCW)) that must be submitted prior to 6 August in order to allow continued employment will be accepted.

Time sensitive applications for visitor extensions will also be accepted.

The Department will resume normal operations on Monday 8th, August and will also remain open to the public until 7.00pm on Wednesday 3rd, August.

The Department apologizes for any inconvenience the closure on 5 August may cause.

 

Five killed in Jamaica as vehicle plunges into gorge

CMC – Five persons were killed late Friday when the vehicle in which they were traveling plunged into the Bog Walk Gorge in the central parish of St. Catherine.

The police, who went to the scene early Saturday, reported that shortly after midnight (local time), the driver of the vehicle, with seven passengers, attempted to beat the traffic light, located on the Flat Bridge in the gorge.

According to eyewitness reports, the driver lost control of the vehicle which then overturned into the Rio Cobre.

The police say all seven were trapped in the vehicle, however one of the occupants managed to climb onto the roof of the vehicle and was rescued.

During the search and rescue operation, the bodies of five of the occupants were recovered – they were all pronounced dead at hospital.

The police are still processing the scene of the tragedy.

Emmy®- And Golden Globe-Winning HBO Series “Game Of Thrones” to begin production on Season Seven this summer

Miami, FL., July 18, 2016 – The Emmy®- and Golden Globe-winning series Game of Thrones will begin shooting its next season later this summer. Production of the seven-episode seventh season will be based in Northern Ireland, while additional portions will be filmed in Spain and Iceland, with debut slated for summer 2017 on HBO.

Season seven directors will include Mark Mylod, Jeremy Podeswa, Matt Shakman and Alan Taylor.

Locations for shooting in Spain will include Sevilla, Caceres, Almodovar del Rio, Santiponce, Zumaia and Bermeo.

Last week, Game of Thrones received 23 Primetime Emmy® nominations, the most of any nominee for the third year in a row. This year’s nominations include Outstanding Drama Series, 2 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington), 3 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, Maisie Williams), Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series (Max von Sydow), 2 for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (Miguel Sapochnik, Jack Bender) and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series (David Benioff and D.B. Weiss).

The seventh season of Game of Thrones is executive produced by David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Carolyn Strauss, Frank Doelger and Bernadette Caulfield, with co-executive producers, Guymon Casady, Vince Gerardis, George R.R. Martin and Bryan Cogman and producers, Chris Newman, Greg Spence and Lisa McAtackney.

 

Red Bay Summer Roadworks Cayman Islands

Most work is being done during off-peak times to avoid disruptions to traffic.

Please drive carefully, and pay attention to signs indicating lane closures or diversions.
