Cayman Islands Quotes of the Week

From Donna

There are golden cords that seem to connect everything. I love these two quotes which seem to sum up a lot:

“No not fate. Nothing was fated. Every incident, every event involving people was the result of actions by themselves, or others. Luck was not a random. He knew what was happening, could feel the magnetic pull…but surely, that too was fate. A meeting at a different time and place could have resulted in a different ending. How often had that happened, he wondered. How many people had come together on the wrong occasion? But, that too, wasn’t fate. That was a melding of separate experiences, and contact and recognition of similar hopes and expectations”.

From: Man on Fire…A. J. Quinnell

“Give sorrow words, the grief not spoken whispers the o’er fraught heart and bids it break.”

Shakespeare

Statement from the Cayman Islands Department of Commerce and Investment (DCI) – DCI addresses illegal vending

The Department of Commerce and Investment (DCI) is obligated to abide by all commerce-related legislation – such as the Trade and Business Licensing (TBL) Law. DCI has been following the provisions in the law that relate to the enforcement of illegal vending.

However, the Ministry of Tourism is currently implementing a plan to have vendors regularised and has requested an extension to the time allocated for the issuance of fines – with the TBL Board agreeing to a one-month extension.

While the enforcement process has been delayed, DCI welcomes collaboration with other Government entities and accepts the TBL Board’s ruling on this matter.

For the vendors involved, this decision is not a reprieve, but rather an opportunity to secure a valid business licence – and gain permission to operate on crown land, such as the Public Beach and West Bay docks – to avoid further enforcement action.

The Jamaican Bobsled Teams is looking to Pyeongchang.

The country’s men’s and women’s bobsled teams are beginning to prepare for qualifying for the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, and they will soon have new sleds.

Japanese manufacturers have announced the donation of three new sleds for the Jamaican bobsled team, following a ceremony at the residence of Japanese Ambassador to Jamaica Masanori Nakano.

“They are accustomed to barely making it because of the lack of resources and funding and they have still astonished the world,” said Jamaican Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange. “So, can you imagine when they get their own brand-new equipment?”

“With Japanese craftsmanship and technology, and the Jamaica Bobsleigh brand, it will be ‘cool runnings’ every time the Jamaica Shitamachi sled touches ice… we are going to be burning on the ice,” she said.

The Jamaican Bobsled Team made its debut at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, inspiring the popular film “Cool Runnings.”

The team most recently qualified for the 2014 Sochi Olympics in Russia thanks to the leadership of veteran Winston Watts.

Caribbean poets meet in Cuba

From CaribFlame

The Meeting of Poets from the Caribbean and the World continued its sessions today in Santiago de Cuba, with the participation of intellectuals and academics from Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Cuba.

Teresa Melo, winner of the National Award Nicolas Guillen and the coordinator of the event, told the news agency, Prensa Latina that the colloquium, which is part of the 36th Festival of the Caribbean, maintains its original concept, that of using poetry as an instrument of exchange.

In today’s session, lectures, recitals and presentations have been delivered. At noon, there was a meeting with the writer Edgar Allan Garcia, from Ecuador, to the culture of which the ‘Fire Festival’, as this event is also known, is dedicated this year.

The event’s program includes activities for the community. Thus, the poets and researchers will leave the conference halls and offer recitals at factories and talk to readers in the community.

Several books will be presented, including the novel Ancient Wood, by Margarita Sanchez-Gallinal, the presentation of which will be made by Cuban intellectual Waldo Leyva, winner of the International Award, Casa del Caribe.

The Meeting of Poets from the Caribbean and the World will conclude on Saturday, July 8th, with a call to hold a new edition of the colloquium in 2017, aimed at building bridges of words among writers from the region.
