Nashville natives missing after plane crash in Caribbean

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) – Two Nashville natives are missing after dedicating the last two years of their lives to helping the people of Haiti.
Charles and Candy Ritzen were most recently in Haiti helping with Hurricane Matthew relief.
According to a news outlet in the Dominican Republic, the couple boarded their plane with another man to head to the Dominican Republic.
On Monday night night, airport personnel lost contact with the plane.
The next day, authorities found wreckage of the Ritzens’ plane but did not find the couple.
Their friends said the couple moved to the Caribbean because they fell in love with the area and wanted to open dental clinics in Haiti.

Disaster Risk Management in the Caribbean, a Study in Cuba
Havana, Oct 19 (Prensa Latina) The 2nd Workshop Course Approaches and Tools for disaster risk management and the adaptation to climate change in terms of sustainable development is holding today its third day with delegates from 11 Caribbean nations.
The agenda reserve important issues, among them: The geological hazards for the Caribbean region, Seismic vulnerability of engineering works, and Health disaster risks and its goal to climate change.
Participants in this event will expand their knowledge on Disaster risk reduction with topics like Key vulnerabilities, Early warning systems and their specificities and The role of early warning systems for hurricanes in reducing disaster risk.
The occasion will be favorable so Kester Craig (Guyana), Anna Tucker (Jamaica), and Frederick Donaldson (Dominica), introduce the early warning systems in their respective countries.
During the opening ceremony of the Workshop Course, the president of the Environment Agency at the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, Maritza Garcia, highlighted the role of science in decision making towards reducing disaster risks.
The minister expressed Cuba’s willingness to contribute its experiences to the countries of the Caribbean Community, according to a Granma newspaper report.

There’s all kinds of country music. Most of what I hear on the radio isn’t worth listening to. But the real music, the weepy, heartfelt, jazzy riffs, the fiddles, pedal steel guitar, the talent—the music you hear so rarely—touches my soul like few other forms of music.
Especially if it’s live.
We decided to head to Nashville to see what its music scene is like. What an unexpected pleasure.
Instead of big and expensive venues, nasty bouncers, and restrictive prohibitions on behavior, folks down south like their music up front, accessible and friendly. We were fortunate to get tickets to a sold out show at a small bar and grille in downtown Nashville, called 3d and Lindley. $20 a ticket to see Vince Gill and the Time Jumpers, some of the best musicians I have had the pleasure of listening to, with a big plus added in. Good sound. Really good sound.

CIBC FirstCaribbean donates water filters to help nearly 1 million Haitians
Executives of CIBC FirstCaribbean presented a check for BDS$25,000 (US$12,500) to Jenny Tryhane of the United Caribbean Trust for the purchase of water filters for the community tanks in the areas hardest hit by Matthew.
Donna Wellington, managing director, Barbados Operating Company, said that even though CIBC FirstCaribbean does not operate in Haiti, the bank wanted to help a Caribbean neighbor in need. She explained that the bank had already worked with the charity after the devastating 2010 earthquake struck Haiti.

The workshop participants will: i) Identify ways in which the knowledge of the impact of climate change on agriculture can be used to design targeted training courses for farmers to improve profitable agribusiness; ii) discuss opportunities, potential constraints and strategies to promote the use of ICTs to upscale climate-resilient solutions among farmers; and iii) Identify key field actions to help specific groups of farmers to adopt and scale up climate-resilient solutions that support profitable agribusiness in the region for the next three years.
Magnitude 5.8 earthquake strikes off Dominica island in Caribbean Sea

ROSEAU (REUTERS) – A magnitude 5.8 quake struck off the island of Dominica in the Caribbean Sea’s Lesser Antilles archipelago on Tuesday, the United States Geological Survey said.
The quake’s epicentre was some 24km west of the capital, Roseau, it said.
Although a magnitude-5.8 quake is capable of causing considerable damage, it was relatively deep, 148km below the seabed, which would mitigate its impact.
Dominica is a sovereign island with a population of about 72,500 people.

US: Rite Aid settles whistleblower lawsuit claiming it used gift cards to lure pharmacy customers

The feds say they’ve settled a lawsuit against pharmacy chain Rite Aid filed by a whistleblower who claimed the company used gift cards to lure Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries to switch their prescriptIons in a bid to gain business.
Rite Aid will pay out almost $3 million to settle the allegations, reports the Associated Press, without admitting any wrongdoing in the matter.
The suit filed by a Florida pharmacist claims that between 2008 and 2010, Rite Aid was in violation of the False Claims Act by offering up the gift cards to lure new business to its pharmacies.
Rite Aid, based in Camp Hill, P.A., says it denies the allegations but is glad the matter is resolved without any further litigation.

Cayman Islands flu vaccines available
Vaccines for the seasonal flu will be available at the Cayman Islands Hospital, District Health Centres in Grand Cayman, Faith Hospital in Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman Clinic.
The locations and times are listed below: –
The General Practice Clinic at the Cayman Islands Hospital, and all District Health Centres, from 2:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning October 19th, 2016.
Faith Hospital in Cayman Brac, Wednesday October 26th 2016.
The Little Cayman Clinic: Residents of Little Cayman should contact the clinic to make arrangements.
To meet the demand in the initial period, the flu shot will also be available at the Cayman Islands Hospital Atrium (next to the Pharmacy) from Tuesday October 17 to November 11, 2016 from 10am – noon on weekdays only. Flu Shots will also be available at Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA), October 26 and 27 at the Arc Camana Bay.
The flu vaccine is FREE to all residents. No appointments are necessary; however, persons should indicate to the registration officer at the clinic that they need to have the flu shot.
Cayman Islands Pirates Week Fun Run/Walks Return
The Pirates Week Festival is once again hosting its series of fun runs; the Pirates Week 5K on the first week end of festivities and the “To Hell and Back 10k” on the final weekend of events.
Both run/walk events are geared for people of all fitness levels and carry a $25 registration fee, however person signing up for both event can save $10 on their total entry fee. Interested people can register online at www.caymanactive.com
The first 100 entrants of either event will also receive a free event t-shirt.
The Pirates Week 5k begins at 5:30pm on Friday 11th November; deadline to register for that event is Wednesday 8th November. The post race celebrations for this event will be held at the Bar Crudo gazebo on Harbour Drive. Proceeds from this event go to the 345 Athletic Club.
The “To Hell and Back 10k” begins at 7:00am on Sunday 20th November with a deadline of Wednesday 16th November. A complimentary post-race breakfast will be held at Calico Jack’s Restaurant on Seven Mile Public Beach.

Cayman Islands Town Hall Meetings about Zika Virus Rescheduled
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the series of town hall meetings about the Zika virus has been rescheduled. The meetings are being held by Public Health to inform residents about Zika, and to address concerns, especially for pregnant women.
The meetings will now take place at Bodden Town Civic Centre on Tuesday, 18 October; Sir John A. Cumber Primary School Hall, West Bay on Tuesday, 25 October; North Side Civic Centre on Tuesday, 1 November; and East End Civic Centre on Tuesday, 8 November. All meetings will be from 5.30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The meetings will be attended by a panel including Acting Medical officer of Health Dr. Samuel Williams-Rodriguez, Ministry of Health Chief Officer Jennifer Ahearn, obstetrician Dr. Gilberta Alexander, internal medicine specialist Dr. Iheonunekwu Nelson, surveillance officer Timothy McLaughlin-Munro and nurse midwife Beverley Samuels, as well as Director of the Mosquito Control and Research Unit, Dr. Bill Petrie.
All, especially pregnant women and concerned members of the public, are invited to attend.

The Pirates Week Festival Office is inviting participants for the annual Food Festival to submit their vendor applications for the below dates/times:

Vendor applications must be submitted beginning on Monday 1st August, 2016 to the Pirates Week Office on Shedden Road, George Town (upstairs next to KFC). Vendor space is limited therefore applications must be submitted as soon as possible after the opening date above. Deadline for submission is Monday 31st October.
All vendors must comply with the rules and regulations set by the Pirates Week Festival Office and must present a valid Food Handling Certificate for all persons handing food by the 31st October. Food handling certificates can be obtained from the Department of Environmental Health by contacting Mr. Gideon Simms on 949-6696 or email [email protected] .

| Fall is here and with the harvest season comes a bounty of shopping with Shoppers’ Night Out – a one-night affair where the shops of Camana Bay mark down prices and visitors can enjoy live music, refreshments and giveaways.
You may notice the buildings in the Town Centre will light up pink from 1-27 October to honour Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There are a number ways to give back, from an Opening Ceremony celebration to the 10th Annual Pilates for Pink to special salon and spa treatments at Eclipze Hair Design & Day Spa’s 16th Annual Cut-A-Thon. Things turn eerie when the Town Centre lights up orange to celebrate all things Halloween from 28-31 October. Families can enjoy a pumpkin carving workshop, budding chefs can make frightfully fun treats, partygoers can dance away at Oktoberfest while kids can do the same at a Halloween Glow Party and moviegoers can enjoy a Frankenstein ballet on the big screen and family-friendly movies on a giant outdoor big screen. Everyone is invited to dress in their costumes for a 5K fun run while trick-or-treaters can also mark their calendars for the always anticipated Spooktacular. Warm regards, Alyson Hay
