In Parliament Today – Summary for 7 May 2025

The Second Sitting of the First Meeting Following the 2025 General Election was held on Wednesday, 7 May. During the sitting, Members of Parliament elected members to the Standing Public Accounts Committee, Standing House Committee, and the Select Committee to oversee the performance of the Office of the Ombudsman.
The following members were elected to serve on the Standing Public Accounts Committee:
- Member for West Bay West – Julie Hunter,
- Member for Newlands – Hon. Wayne Panton,
- Member for George Town East – Hon. Roy McTaggart,
- Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Member for George Town Central – Kenneth Bryan,
- Member for Red Bay – Roy Tatum, and
- Member for Bodden Town West – Christopher Saunders.
Per the Standing Orders, all Members of Parliament will serve on the Standing Select Committee of Privileges. Committee members will elect a Chairman and Deputy Chairman from amongst themselves. The Deputy Chairman will serve as Chairman during the absence of the Chairman.
Deputy Governor, Honourable Franz Manderson moved Motion 1 of 2025-2026 Appointment of the Standing House Committee. The Motion was accepted and Speaker of the House, Honourable Ezzard Miller opened nominations.
Five Members of Parliament accepted the nomination to be members of the Standing House Committee. They include the:
- Member for West Bay Central – Hon. Katherine Ebanks-Wilks,
- Member for Cayman Brac West – Hon. Nickolas DaCosta,
- Member for Savannah – Heather Bodden,
- Member for Red Bay – Roy Tatum, and
- Member for George Town North – Hon. Joey Hew.
The members will elect a Chairman and Deputy Chairman at their first sitting and report back to the House.
The following members were elected to serve on the Select Committee to oversee the performance of the Office of the Ombudsman;
- Member for North Side – Hon. Jay Ebanks,
- Deputy Premier and Member for George Town South – Hon. Gary Rutty,
- Member for West Bay West – Julie Hunter,
- Member for Bodden Town West – Christopher Saunders, and
- Deputy Speaker and Member for George Town West – Pearlina McGaw-Lumsden.
Following the appointments, several Members of Parliament took the opportunity to thank members of their constituencies, friends, and families for supporting them during the 2025 General Election.
Deputy Governor, Hon. Franz Manderson spoke highly of the newly elected members and acknowledged the late nights and continued work of the Civil Service during the transition of Government. The Deputy Governor specifically thanked Chief Officer Gloria McField-Nixon, Maria Rodriguez, Cetonya Cacho, Jennifer Ahearn, Christen Suckoo and Matthew Hylton for their diligent work.
In his remarks, Attorney General, Honourable Samuel Bulgin congratulated Speaker of the House, Honourable Ezzard Miller and all members of parliament. The Attorney General also thanked the Supervisor of Elections and his staff, noting he was proud of the democratic framework. He added, “I look forward to working with all Honourable members to deliver the needs of our community and our people. And Mr. Speaker to do so in a way that is transparent, is open and understandable Mr. Speaker.”
