HBO announces documentary lineup for first half of 2017

MIAMI, Fla. – January 24, 2017 HBO has confirmed a diverse array of timely and thought-provoking documentaries for the first half of 2017. Delving into controversial issues where different points of view are explored to generate discussion, the upcoming HBO documentaries include:

Every Brilliant Thing (January, 2017) strikes a delicate balance between sobering loss and cathartic laughter. Adapting the hit off-Broadway one-character show of the same name written by Duncan Macmillan and starring British comedian Jonny Donahoe, this deeply poignant film recounts a life lived in the shadow of suicide.

Told through the lens of a love story, the Oscar®-winning documentary short, The Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness (March, 2017) examines the tensions between modernism and tradition in Pakistan. Directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the film follows Saba, a young Pakistani woman, who has survived her attempted honor killing by her own family.

Beware the Slenderman (May, 2017) tells the true story of 12-year-olds Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, who lured their best friend into the woods, stabbed her 19 times and confessed they did it to appease a tall and faceless man known online as Slenderman. Featuring heart-wrenching access to the girls’ families, the haunting documentary plunges deep down the rabbit hole of their actions, exploring how the dark corners of the Internet can influence society’s most impressionable young consumers of media.

Risky Drinking (June, 2017) takes a case-study look at the hazards of alcohol use and details the ways the medical community views and treats “risky drinkers.” Nearly one-third of adults in the U.S. engage in problem drinking at some point in their lives. Health professionals assess drinkers at risk on a spectrum ranging from low-risk to an alcohol use disorder that can range from mild to severe.  The documentary challenges viewers to recognize when their drinking may be putting them at risk and offers information that could help millions of Americans lead healthier lives.

All documentaries will be available on HBO GO following its premiere on the channel. Subscribers can access HBO GO in the website www.hbogoca.com in any desktop or laptop computer (PC or Apple).  The App can also be downloaded in mobile devices with iOS (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch) and Android (OS 2.3+) operational systems.
