A mental health sufferer who was subsequently acknowledged by the court to be a patient of prominent psychiatrist Dr Bhiro Harry has been placed on $80,000 bail after being charged with unlawful wounding.

The 27-year-old man, Jermain October, who hails from Beterverwagting (BV) on the East Coast of Demerara was hauled before the Sparendaam Court on Friday where he pleaded guilty to chopping Allan Nicholas with a cutlass on his right hand and left shoulder on the 20th September 2018 at the victim’s home, which is situated at Ogle-street Beterverwagting.

When given a chance to speak prior to sentencing, all the accused could have said was “Trip”.

After some consultation with police ranks that were present, only then the Magistrate received information that the young man was actually a mental health patient, forcing her to change the man’s guilty plea to not guilty.

He was then placed on $80,000 bail.
