About the press conference:CCMI will officially launch two critical projects that are supported by RESEMBID grants, funded by the European Union:
1. Building Resilient Reefs Project title: Increasing Coral Reef Resilience with Assisted Evolution via Selective Restoration

2. Adapting to Covid-19Project Title: Urgent technical assistance to support CCMI’s capacity to be a regional leader in protecting marine biodiversity and improving resilience.

About the RESEMBID grants:

In February 2022, the Central Caribbean Marine Institute (CCMI), based in the Cayman Islands, was awarded RESEMBID grants for €257,949 to further their cutting-edge coral restoration research and €203,384 for adapting facilities and operations to Covid-19.

RESEMBID is funded by the European Union and implemented by Expertise France – the development cooperation agency of the Government of France. RESEMBID supports sustainable human development efforts in 12 Caribbean Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs) – Aruba, Anguilla, Bonaire, British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Curaçao, Montserrat, Saba, Sint Eustatius, Saint Barthélemy, Sint Maarten and Turks and Caicos.

About the Reef Lecture:
Coral populations that build coral reefs are declining worldwide. The creeping loss of corals directly impacts people and countless marine species that depend on healthy reefs. Dr. Bruno will talk about why this is happening, why it matters, and what we can do about it.
This is a FREE event. In-person and virtual registration options are available. Advance registration is required. Attendees for the in-person event at the National Gallery will be required to wear masks while in the auditorium.
About the speaker:Dr. John Bruno is a marine ecologist and Professor in the Department of Biology at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research is focused on marine biodiversity and macroecology, coral reef ecology and conservation, and the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems. Dr. Bruno earned his Ph.D. from Brown University in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and was a postdoctoral fellow at Cornell University in disease ecology. His lab group primarily works in the Galápagos and the Caribbean – including Belize, the Bahamas, and Cuba. He is also a science communicator and co-developer of the oceans website SeaMonster.
