Georgieva IMF Rwanda Roundtable B−Roll

IMF

On Wednesday, January 25, the IMF Managing Director held a roundtable in Kigali, Rwanda with Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors from the East African Community to discuss the challenges they face on the heels of the COVID-19 pandemic, the economic fallout from Russia’s war in Ukraine, the cost-of-living crisis, and climate change.

The discussion focused more specifically on the challenges the East Africa region is facing on climate change and how the IMF could support its East African members mobilize climate finance through the Resilience and Sustainability Facility, a new facility to help vulnerable low- and middle-income countries address longer-term structural changes such as climate change and pandemic preparedness.

The IMF has provided more than $50bn to the region since the beginning of the pandemic and currently has 22 financing programs in Sub Saharan Africa.
