Gemma Arterton has been nominated for an Olivier Award for her role in Made In Dagenham which is due to close next month.

The actress has received wide plaudits for her first onstage singing role as factory worker Rita O’Grady.

The musical has only been on for six months but follows Stephen Ward, Viva Forever and I Can’t Sing which all closed after a short time in the West End.

Musicals lead the way for this year’s Oliviers with Memphis The Musical and Beautiful – The Carole King Musical receiving nine and eight nods respectively.

Gillian Anderson is also in the running for a best actress prize for her much-lauded Young Vic performance in A Streetcar Named Desire.

Kristin Scott Thomas (Electra), Imelda Staunton (Good People) and Penelope Wilton (Taken At Midnight) are also up for the award.

Best actor nominees are James McAvoy (The Ruling Class), Mark Strong (A View From The Bridge), Richard Armitage (The Crucible) and Tim Pigott-Smith (King Charles III).

Former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger has been nominated in the supporting actress category for her star turn as Grizabella in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats.

The show is also up for best musical revival.

The stage adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies at the Aldwych Theatre has five nominations.

All the nominations for best new play – Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies, King Charles III, The Nether and Taken At Midnight – originated in subsidised theatres.

The Young Vic, where productions included A View From The Bridge and A Streetcar Named Desire, received the most nominations for a single venue, with 11.

Caro Newling, president of the Society of London Theatre, said: “2015 has been another incredible year for London theatre.”

The Olivier Awards take place at the Royal Opera House on Sunday 12 April.
