Freedom United and over 190 organizations call on fashion brands to exit Uyghur Region

Freedom United is joined by over 190 organizations calling on fashion brands to commit to exit the Uyghur Region within 12 months. The new coalition spans 36 different countries and includes over 70 Uyghur groups. With one in five cotton garments sold globally containing cotton from the region, countless global apparel brands are benefitting from the Chinese government’s system of forced labor.  Read more…

Eritrean government gives Danakali mining project go-ahead

Eritrea has officially endorsed mining corporation Danakali’s plans for its Colluli project, meaning the Australian firm now has 36 months to commence operations. While Danakali claims to have safeguards against forced labor, oversight is difficult in a country like Eritrea—and the mining project, as a joint venture with the government, will directly strengthen the state and thus indirectly support its system of forced labor regardless.
