PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Thursday February 5, 2015, CMC – At least1 13 people were taken to hospital with several injuries following an explosion at a fast food outlet at Maraval on the outskirts of the capital on Thursday.

According to the Trinidad Express, “at least four are in critical condition at the Port of Spain General Hospital”.

Richard Camacho, who owns the El Pecos chain of restaurants, told the Express that all his employees have been accounted four. There were eight employees in the restaurant.

Fire and police officials said they were still combing the complex that housed several other businesses for anyone trapped in the buildings.

“Saddle Road has been closed to traffic from the Long Circular Roundabout to the entrance to Fairways, Maraval. The Shoppes of Maraval, which is located nearby, has been closed. The mall parking lot is being used as an emergency operations centre, where paramedics, doctors and nurses attended to the injured” according to reports in the Trinidad Express.

Black smoke billowed from the complex as motorists and pedestrians were kept far away from the buildings.
