FIFA Bars Caribbean Football Union President from CONCACAF presidency race

President of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Gordon Derrick says he has been barred by football’s world governing body FIFA from running for the post of CONCACAF president.

Derrick says he received a letter from the FIFA Audit and Compliance Committee yesterday informing him that he cannot be admitted as a candidate for the election to the office of FIFA vice-president.

This means he is also barred from being a candidate for the CONCACAF presidency.

The letter from Chairman of the Audit and Compliance Committee Domenico Scala cited a November 17, 2011 reprimand following the Bin Hammam matter.

In that incident, Derrick was fined 300 Swiss Francs.

There is also an ongoing investigation that began on March 6, 2015.

Derrick says he finds it very curious that a reprimand of 2011 was too small to warrant an appeal and further that the principal person in the matter was vindicated upon his appeal, yet this was deemed significant enough to derail his candidacy.

Derrick also says it is equally interesting that the investigation opened against him by the FIFA Ethics Committee has been prolonged for over a year and was used as the second plank upon which he was disqualified.

He says given the series of events leading up to this announcement, he is not surprised, but he is nonetheless disappointed and concerned.

Derrick also says he is carefully considering his next move and hopes to make a more comprehensive statement in due course.
