The Goombay Smash (Bahamas)

From Delicious Caribbean Cocktails and Recipes

BY ROBERT CURLEY From Trip Savvy

Rum is the spirit of choice in the Caribbean

Born in the humble Blue Bee Bar on Great Turtle Cay in the Out Islands of the Bahamas, this potent libation contains four kinds of rum. Created by Blue Bee Bar founder Miss Emily, the Goombay Smash — not the Bahama Mama — is the national drink of the Bahamas. It’s named after the traditional form of drum-oriented Bahamian music, similar to calypso.

After one sip, you’ll be bouncing from island to island.

Nothing says summer like this potent tropical cocktail from the Pink Sands Resort on Harbour Island in the Bahamas.

Smashes are drinks that usually contain muddled mint, but not always. Some examples of early smashes from the 1800’s consist of a spirit, like whisky, gin, or rum with sugar and mint. These were usually served in an old fashion glass. The modern idea for a smash is a drink with a good dose of spirit and a combination of fresh fruit juices. The Goombay Smash is a popular example of this modern variation. The original smash was created in Green Turtle Cay, the Bahamas at the Blue Bee Bar. This drink is now popular throughout the Caribbean. If you like rum, pineapple and coconut, this drink might be for you, however, this is not your mothers pina colada.
