Follow up on the use of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine
Today, the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices met in an emergency meeting. They recommended that the Johnson and Johnson (J&J) vaccine stay on pause until they gather more data. They will most likely meet again in the next 7-10 days so the pause will last at least 2 weeks.

During the meeting, more details about the six women affected emerged. None of the women had clotting disorders. One was taking birth control pills which can also lead to blood clots. Three were obese and one each had low thyroid, high blood pressure and asthma. All of them were Caucasian. Also discussed was a case of a brain clot in a 25 year old male who participated in the J&J trial last October.

As I discussed yesterday, these rare clots were seen with both the J&J and AstraZeneca vaccines. Both use weakened adenovirus as their delivery mechanism. In Europe, regulators have tracked 62 cases of brain clots with 18 fatalities, mostly in females in people who received the AstraZenica vaccine, according to CIDRAP news.

The White House today said that the US vaccine supply will not be significantly affected by the pause in J&J vaccine usage. Patients scheduled to receive the J&J vaccine are being rescheduled with one of the other two approved vaccines.

So here’s the problem we face with this. This potential issue will further promote vaccine hesitancy across our country especially with regard to the J&J vaccine. Its hard to imagine that people will be happy to get the J&J vaccine no matter what the studies show when there are two other vaccines without the clotting issue available. We will have to see what happens over the next few weeks.

I still tell you to get your self vaccinated quickly so we can get through this together.
