News Tidbits

Smart Vaccine thinking
Finally, smart thinking on the vaccine front. I have been saying all along that I thought governments who have paid billions of dollars for vaccines should demand that formula’s are public knowledge so that all vaccine makers can make vaccines. While that didn’t happen, today it was announced that a deal brokered by the White House will allow Merck, an experienced vaccine maker to assist Johnson and Johnson to make more vaccine. This type of collaboration is not usual and the President said today that it was reminiscent of the collaboration seen in World War Two. Both the Trump and Biden administrations had explored enlisting Merck to help J&J. Merck will provide two facilities to this effort and it will take some time to ramp up but it is a step in the right direction to make more vaccine available faster.

Hold Your Horses cowboy!
Today, the Texas Governor announced that they are lifting the Mask MandateI know I sound like a broken record but now is not the time to let our guard down. We need to see what happens when B.1.1.7 UK variant becomes the dominant variant in the US. As we watch a leveling off of the drop in cases and wait for the possible climb in cases, all public health experts are urging Governors to maintain their public health measures. So in the state that just two weeks ago put their residents through hell when the electric grid failed due to cold weather all because they can’t be bothered to require the electric grid companies to winterize their systems, in the state that still has large swaths of their citizens that don’t have clean drinking water due to pipes bursting and pumps failing from the failed electric grid, they now face additional health risks from people who listen to the governor and think that now is the time to relax and celebrate the end of the pandemic.

If I sound a bit annoyed, its because I am. 516, 283 people have died in the US from CoViD-19 so far and many or most of them didn’t have to. Governors did not do what was necessary to protect their citizens in this public health crisis. I hope we remember this and hold them accountable when it comes time to vote.

When you are eligible, get your self vaccinated so we can get through this together. .
