Downey’s ‘Holmes’ wins weekend with $39.6M debut

LOS ANGELES (AP) — There was no mystery at the weekend box office. Robert Downey Jr.’s “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” debuted as the clear favorite with $39.6 million.
The family sequel “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” opened a distant No. 2 with $23.3 million.
The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Sunday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Hollywood.com are:
