Eritrea forced labor lawsuit withdrawn as E.U. promises no more roads

In May, the Amsterdam-based Foundation Human Rights for Eritreans filed a lawsuit against the European Union for its funding of a road project in Eritrea that utilized forced conscript labor. But after the E.U. promised to cease funding to road projects in Eritrea, the group has cautiously withdrawn its lawsuit—but has said that concerns remain.

Forced labor, torture and abuse: the reality for Libya’s refugees

A damning new report from Amnesty International brings forth fresh evidence of the appalling conditions faced by refugees in Libya, including forced labor. The E.U. is complicit in serious human rights abuses by supporting the Libyan Coast Guard, which is responsible for forcibly returning tens of thousands of migrants fleeing across the Mediterranean. Freedom United is urgently calling on the E.U. to cease funding the Libyan Coast Guard and uphold human rights. Read more…

U.S. moves toward action on Uyghur forced labor with overwhelming support for new bill

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act with rare bipartisan support, bringing the country a step closer to enforcing the world’s first national legislation targeting Uyghur forced labor. The bill would block goods made with forced labor in the Uyghur Region, impose sanctions on those responsible, and require the Secretary of State to weigh calling the forced labor system a genocide.Read more…
