Cayman: DG’s 5K Challenge 2019 gets racing start on Cayman Brac

The 2019 DG’s 5K Challenge hurtled out of the blocks on Sunday, 15 September with a strong showing from participants on Cayman Brac.

Among the competitors was H.E. the Governor Martyn Roper, who participated alongside the event’s co-chairs, Deputy Governor Hon. Franz Manderson and Strategic Operations Officer Jennifer Ahearn.

Racers in the 30-39 year old age category performed impressively, with Greg Shepherd from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) scooping fastest overall male (and first in the age category) and Claudia Martin of the Cayman Islands Airports Authority (CIAA) taking the title of overall fastest female (third in the age category).

Just short of 90 people registered for the walk/run with 72 taking part on the day.

Layman E. Scott Sr. High School won the accolade of highest number of participants among the school entrants, with Brac Insurance Associates winning the title for corporate business. The Health Services Authority (HSA) was the best represented Statutory Authority and Government Company (SAGC) and District Administration CYB the highest participating group among core Government.

“Kicking off the 2019 DG’s 5K Challenge on the Brac on Sunday was the perfect start to this year’s event,” Mr. Manderson explained. “It was especially good to see everyone enjoying themselves, while supporting some excellent causes and participating in some healthy exercise.”

He added: “I’m now looking forward to the event on Grand Cayman in two weeks’ time. I encourage you all to join us, whether you want to enjoy a walk alongside friends or push for a personal best. Everyone is welcome!”

DG & Governor

This year, funds raised will be split evenly between: Cayman Islands Crisis Centre, Special Needs Foundation Cayman and Alex Panton Foundation.

The Grand Cayman event will take place on Sunday, 29 September and prospective participants can register now on the CaymanActive website www.caymanactive.com/dg5k.
