UWC Cayman Islands has recently received a generous donation of US$20,000 from Deutsche Bank (Cayman Islands) Limited to help support its scholarship programme for exceptional Caymanian students.

Deutsche Bank began its support to mark UWC Cayman Islands’ 25th anniversary in 2009 and has continued to provide financial assistance annually since that time.

UWC Cayman Islands Chairperson, Tara Rivers, was appreciative of the impact their support has had over the past years:

“Since 2009, Deutsche Bank (Cayman Islands) Limited has played an integral role as a significant donor for the UWC Cayman Islands scholarship fund. The generosity of Deutsche Bank translates into real, tangible benefits to the scholars we select to attend the various worldwide UWCs every year, and to the Cayman Islands as a whole.”

This year, Madeleine Rowell was selected from a competitive pool of applicants as the 2012 UWC scholar. She will be matriculating at UWC-USA in New Mexico in the fall, joining students from all over the world as she pursues an International Baccalaureate diploma over the next two years. Upon graduation, Rowell will join over 60 Caymanian alumni, many of whom hold key leadership positions in both the public and private sectors, domestically and abroad.

Janet Hislop, Chief Country Officer for Deutsche Bank Cayman Islands, said:

“A large part of Deutsche Bank’s commitment to the local community is supporting young Caymanians by helping them realise their full potential and, with this in mind, I am delighted to be able to maintain our support of the United World College. Studying at a UWC can give students a unique experience that will stand them in good stead to make a positive contribution to Cayman society in the future. I congratulate Madeleine on her scholarship success this year.”

Rivers further commented on the effect that a UWC experience and education brings:

“As the UWC movement continues to grow, Cayman’s business sector and wider community has benefited, and will hopefully continue to benefit, from the civic-minded, challenge-oriented and culturally aware students, employees and leaders that the UWC movement fosters. We thank Deutsche Bank for being a part of this process and look forward to their continued support in years to come.”

Conceived in the 1950’s by the notable educationalist Kurt Hahn, who is also the founder of the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme, UWC offers an exceptional learning and living experience for students from over 120 countries. Founded on the ideals of international peace and understanding, the United World Colleges are a university preparation programme for students aged 16–18 years old that awards the International Baccalaureate Diploma on successful completion. The programme is based upon participation in a two-year, academically rigorous set of courses coupled with community service, cultural endeavours and physical activities.
