CUC announces 2020 scholarship recipients

In keeping with the Company’s commitment to scholastic excellence, six young Caymanians recently received financial assistance towards furthering their education. Nicholas Scott, James Ebanks, Jayden Downey and Marcus Lawrence were awarded scholarships to pursue university level studies and Alexander Havlin and Shayana Windsor were awarded scholarships to complete their A level studies.

A 2013 CUC scholarship recipient, Nicholas Scott is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University in Fort Wayne, Indiana. After completing a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) in 2017, Nicholas returned to CUC as a Graduate Engineer in the Engineering Services and Business Development Department. While at FIT, he was enrolled in the Company’s Summer Intern Programme and worked with the Electrical Maintenance Department and Engineering Services and Business Development Department.

James Ebanks, a 2016 CUC scholarship recipient, is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Sustainable Energy Systems at the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom. After completing a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom in 2019, James returned to the Company as a Graduate Engineer in the Engineering Services and Business Development Department. Throughout his tenure at the University of Bristol, James returned to Grand Cayman to work at CUC during his summer breaks.

Jayden Downey received a scholarship to pursue a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. A graduate of Triple C School and Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida, Jayden was enrolled in the Company’s Summer Intern and Vocational Trainee Programme in 2019 and worked with the Electrical Maintenance Department. Jayden plans to pursue a career in Electrical Engineering.

Marcus Lawrence received a scholarship to pursue a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on Sustainable Energy Systems from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. Marcus completed his A level studies at St. Ignatius Catholic High School in 2020 attaining passes in Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Geography. He plans to pursue a career in Mechanical Engineering.

Alexander Havlin recently graduated from St. Ignatius Catholic High School with nine IGCSE passes in Mathematics, English Language, English Literature, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Business Studies, Religious Education and Computer Science. Alexander returned to St. Ignatius Catholic High School in September to pursue A level studies in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science and Physical Education and aspires to enter the Computer Programming and/or Engineering profession.

Shayana Windsor recently graduated from St. Ignatius Catholic High School with ten IGCSE passes in Mathematics, English, Religious Education, Physical Education, Accounting, Music, Spanish, Biology, Physics and Chemistry. Shayana also returned to St. Ignatius Catholic High School in September to pursue A level studies in Accounting, Mathematics, Biology and Physical Education. Ms. Windsor plans to enter the accounting profession after completing her university studies.

CUC established its scholarship programme in 1989 and since then has awarded full and partial scholarships to over 55 current and past employees and high school students in the fields of mechanical and electrical engineering, information technology, systems operations, environmental management, occupational safety and health and financial services. In 2016, the Company further enhanced its scholarship programme by offering assistance for qualified students to pursue their A levels.
