On World Health Day 2025, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) warned that while the region of the Americas has progressed towards reducing maternal mortality, challenges remain, requiring urgent efforts to ensure all women have access to quality maternal health care.

South America nears eradication of foot-and-mouth disease, with over 65% of livestock in disease-free zones without vaccination

Two out of three cattle in South America are currently located in foot-and-mouth disease-free zones where vaccination is not practiced. Across the entire Americas, more than 80% of cattle are in this condition, bringing the region closer to the eradication of the disease.

New PAHO report reveals that 14 countries in the Americas face health worker shortages

A new report from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), The Health Workforce in the Americas: Regional Data and Indicators, reveals that 14 out of 39 countries in the Americas lack sufficient doctors, nurses, and midwives to meet the health needs of their populations. Without immediate interventions, the Americas could face a deficit of between 600,000 and 2 million health workers by 2030, compromising universal health access and coverage.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) works with the countries of the Americas to improve the health and quality of life of its population. Founded in 1902, it is the world’s oldest international public health agency. It serves as the Regional Office of WHO for the Americas and is the specialized health agency of the Inter-American system.
