Cayman Turtle Farm celebrates Earth Month

Day 2 - Cayman Turtle12The Cayman Turtle Farm: Island Wildlife Encounter is celebrating Earth Month this weekend with a half-off admission special for Cayman residents and participation in the island-wide Chamber of Commerce Earth Day clean-up.

On Saturday, 26th April all resident admissions will be offered at half-off regular rates. As a result of this special Earth Month offer, residents can enjoy the park for just CI$5 for adults, CI$2 for children aged 5 to 12 and entry is free as always for children aged 4 and under.

Saturday, 26th April is also the date designated for the Chamber of Commerce Earth Day Clean-up, and a team of Cayman Turtle Farm staff have volunteered to participate by cleaning up the Northwest Point area of West Bay, where the Cayman Turtle Farm is located.

As a reward for everyone participating in the Chamber of Commerce clean-up and also those supporting the National Trust’s Earth Day activities, anyone wearing a 2014 Chamber of Commerce Earth Day Clean-up T-shirt or a National Trust 2014 Earth Day T-shirt will gain free admission to the Cayman Turtle Farm on Saturday, 26th April.

And there’s more happening at the Cayman Turtle Farm to observe and celebrate Earth Month. A plastic recycling programme that started at the park last year in honour of Earth Month has continued throughout the year, and is marking its first anniversary during this year’s Earth Month.

Specially designated bins are placed throughout the park to collect plastic water and drink bottles for recycling. On an average day, visitors to the Cayman Turtle Farm can consume over 200 bottles of bottled water alone.

The plastics recycling programme joins the other recycling and energy saving actions that are practiced at the Cayman Turtle Farm.

“We know that everyone lives better when our world is more environmentally friendly,” said Cayman Turtle Farm Chief Marketing Officer Tina Trumbach.

“With this in mind, the Cayman Turtle Farm practices small every day ways that help make our corner of the world a greener place to live for visitors, locals, and the wildlife of the Cayman Islands,” she said.

Some of the “Green” acts that are commonplace in the various departments at the park include:

  • Reusing one side printed paper for non-formal documents and copying
  • Turning off air conditioning and opening the windows during cold fronts and cool breezy days
  • Collecting aluminum cans for recycling
  • Recycling the used cooking oil at our park restaurant. (It is collected and converted to auto fuel)
  • Serving drinks with biodegradable straws at our park restaurant
  • Collecting algae from the daily cleaning of the park’s 1.3 million gallon salt water lagoon, which is then dried and used as fertiliser in the park’s landscaping
