Cayman Thanksgiving 2020

Cayman Thanksgiving is celebrated annually on the first Sunday in December to commemorate the official end of the Hurricane Season. This year Cayman Thanksgiving is observed on Sunday, 6 December.

2020 has been an extraordinary year not only for the Cayman Islands but the world. In addition to several near misses and direct hits from a number of Tropical Storms and Hurricanes, we have also experienced a number of earthquakes and continue to grapple with the global Covid-19 pandemic and its profound impact on lives, livelihoods and communities.

It is therefore in consideration of the health and safety of our community and remaining within current public gathering limits that Cayman Thanksgiving Ltd (NPO #368) is not planning any formal events or concerts for Cayman Thanksgiving 2020. However celebrations continue albeit in a more personalised format. 2020 will be the most important and meaningful Cayman Thanksgiving since the first celebration in 2011. Cayman Islands residents have so much to be thankful for especially the unparalleled freedom, safety and well-being we enjoy in the midst of a global pandemic.

We are encouraging families, friends and neighbors to safely and responsibly host a meal using locally grown produce and traditional Caymanian recipes on the weekend of December 6 to celebrate and express gratitude. We also ask that you consider opening your home to or sharing your meal with those who may be less fortunate, especially those who may have lost their income or been unable to resume full employment due to the pandemic.

This year we invite the community to use their personal social media platforms to inspire others by sharing a story or testimony about things you are thankful for this year.

The spirit of Cayman Thanksgiving is alive and well. We recognise our need to give thanks especially in a year filled with tragedy, turmoil and devastation. Let us join together on Sunday 6 December in a national moment of reflection and connection and count our blessings individually and collectively.

We take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy Cayman Thanksgiving.
