Cayman Marathon Man HAINES 2nd!

Marathons and volcanoes challenge appeal for CCMI update

A significant donation of CI$15,000 from “Butterfield Bank (Cayman) Limited” together with contributions from DART Cayman and Jacques Scott to the Central Caribbean Marine Institute (CCMI) appeal set Derek Haines off with a happy heart at the Lake Atitlan, Guatemala, marathon on the 30th April.

Derek (68) finished 2nd in his age group in a time of 5 hours 10 minutes. He said, ”This was my 46th marathon and the toughest yet. I would not argue with the fact that is billed as being in the top 10 most challenging marathon races in the world. It starts at 5,000 feet and contains some very steep slopes up and down the mountainous terrain. The winner came in around 3.30 so that is a good indication how hard it was.

I am extremely grateful to “Butterfield Bank (Cayman) Limited” and the other donors as this has given the CCMI appeal a tremendous kick start to the target of CI$50,000.”

Derek is also extremely pleased that Her Excellency the Governor, Mrs. Helen Kilpatrick, has again agreed to be the patron of his annual fund-raiser.
