Cayman: Landfill Fire Update

At the George Town Landfill yesterday (Thursday, 6 May 2021) Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) and Department of Environmental Health (DEH) colleagues continued damping operations of the initial area of concern from the previous night’s fire, throughout the day.

After light smoke was seen emitting from a new area of concern yesterday morning, a thermal imaging camera (TIC) found a temperature reading of 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

A monitor was placed in operation to damp the area, to ensure no chance of ignition. An investigatory hole, approximately 60’x20’x5′ ft, found no signs of charring below this area.

Then at around 4p.m in the afternoon, the TIC recorded a temperature reading of 142 degrees Fahrenheit giving cause for concern. As with the smoke in the morning, the new area was in close proximity to the site of the previous fire.

As a result damping operations continued throughout the night with an assessment being made this morning, to determine the necessary tactics to address the situation.

CIFS continues to focus on safe systems of work in all its operations.
