All healthy societies need people who are willing dedicate themselves to making a difference. The 2016 YCLA Finalists all exhibit this quality of giving back to our community.
Dr. Kristina Maxwell is an active volunteer and advocate for community healthcare, wellness programs, and fitness. She has been speaking at event on this subject since 2011. This past year, Dr. Maxwell served as the coordinator for The Rowena Scott Memorial 5K Walk/Run.
“Rowena Scott was a receptionist who worked in our department, and she died in a tragic car accident,” explained the Health Services Authority’s Faith Gealey. “She was a young single mother of four children, and to honour her memory Dr. Maxwell came up with the concept to integrate exercise promotion as well as memorializing this young mother for her children.” The money raised was donated to the children’s schools for lunches and uniforms and the event was a great success,
The department is hoping to make this an annual event to honour the memory of Rowena Scott for her children, to help with school expenses, and as a way to get the community active through sport. “Dr. Maxwell is extremely organized and goal oriented, she is a team player but also a great leader. She comes up with goals and tasks to achieve as she is very detail oriented, but also is a true humanitarian to impact the lives of these four young children who lost their Mother, as memorialized by this event,” says Faith Gealey from HSA.

Mrs. Shena Ebanks is active in the community and on the volunteer scene as a constant supporter for children’s activities, church events, and human development through education and mentorship. This event is an annual event fundraiser to raise funds to donate to the Deputy Governor’s charity of choice each year. Last year the funds were directed towards the purchase of an ambulance”, says Ventisha Conolly, who is also an YCLA Alumni.

Even when he was just a student at John Gray High School, Tedrick Green was recognized for his leadership and volunteering acumen. Teachers and peers, nominated him to represent the school as Head Boy. They secured a small loan through Barclays Bank and went on to become the first runner up for the Company of the Year Award by offering a diverse product line, and operating at a profit. The conference focused on honing leadership skill and provided him with the opportunity to work with delegates from around the globe, and participate in week long workshops with the common theme “gagner par le travail” (winning with teamwork). He still maintains friendships with some of the extraordinary delegate leaders with whom he forged lasting impressions.
Since his time at school he has continued to take on more leadership and voluntary roles which also led him to being selected to attend Rotary’s Young Leadership Awards (RYLA) in Florida; another conference from which Mr. Green continues to maintain relationships with young leaders around the world. In 2006 he started a company with the goal of offering more diverse Cayman inspired keepsakes, which ultimately support and promote tourism for the Islands.

“Tedrick Green is someone who is a born leader. From our first encounter at 15 I knew he would be a success story. He works hard and humbly smashes all his goals personally and professionally. Not only has he succeeded in his career but he is actively involved in the community. Tedrick has been involved behind the scenes with Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman for almost 3 years. Mr. Green became one of the founding members for the Cayman Hub of Global Shapers. This organization is an initiative of the World Economic Forum whereby individual Hubs around the world undertake projects to improve the state of their communities. “A Global Shaper is a selected individual who is talented; possess professional qualifications and outstanding leadership qualities. He or she must also have the potential/ability to shape his/her local community with the result of global impact”, says Alison Maxwell another Global Shaper.
“Tedrick was specifically chosen to be a Global Shaper as he [is] recognized as an extraordinary individual, who could make a significant difference both locally and globally.
