Cayman Islands veterans: We will remember fallen heroes

Mayor Pete West will be among those observing a two-minute silence at the Hove War Memorial in Grand Avenue on Friday at 11am.

Participants will then walk through Strand Street to St Thomas’ Church, where a service will begin at 10am.

Friday also has special significance for the memorial, marking 75 years since it opened in 1941.

Another service in Lonan will be taking place at the All Saints’ Church at 2pm on Sunday, which is organised by the Laxey and Lonan branch of the Royal British Legion.

Poppy wreaths may be obtained by contacting Mrs Barbara Ronson on 01204 695742.

After an offertory is taken by members of the Veterans and Seamen’s Society of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, there will be the recognition of veterans and the laying of the wreaths.

The Mayor’s Charity Concert at Christ Church, Bear Street in Barnstaple, tomorrow night at 7pm will also have a Remembrance theme.

On Sunday, November 13 there will be a Remembrance Sunday Service at 10.30am at the Rock Park War Memorial, followed by parade to the Parish Church.

The parade will finish up outside the church where the service will take place, incorporating a two minute silence at 11am.

A temporary closure of the route of the Parade will be required between 10.30am and 12.15pm.

In Mexborough, the parade will form up on the Mexborough Police Station Car Park, in Adwick Road, to leave at 10.15am along Doncaster Road, towards Castle Hills Park and the war memorial, ready for the service to commence at 10.50am.

The island’s national service will be held on Sunday at the Royal Chapel in St John’s at 3pm.

Diss: There will be a two minute silence at 11am across the town, but led from the town centre.

Exmouth will remember the fallen when the town holds its annual Remembrance Day service on Sunday, November 13 – and big crowds are expected.

A parade, led by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service and Band, will kick off the event.

The Vicar of Bolton, Reverend Matt Thompson, will conduct the service. Belford schools will attend for a two minutes’ silence, followed by a Service of Remembrance at St Mary’s.

A wreath-laying was part of the service at the Saskatchewan Legislature in Regina Wednesday.

The parade to Eastbourne War Memorial will start at the RAFA Club in Wish Road at 10.15am, and will be followed by the traditional wreath laying and service.

Captain Dale Banks, President of the Cayman Islands Veterans Association, said, “Remembrance Sunday is a time to honor”.
