Cayman Islands utility company explains outage on Monday, May 21

On Monday, May 21st, 2018, customers in West Bay experienced interruptions to their electricity service between 5:18 p.m. and 2:28 a.m.

Areas affected included North West Point Road, Watercourse Road and all side roads.

This interruption to service was caused by a single-car motor vehicle accident in the vicinity of Rennie Ebanks Road on North West Point Road. The motor vehicle collided and damaged two of the Company’s distribution poles servicing the North West Point Road area.

CUC’s line crews responded immediately as pole debris and downed distribution lines blocked the North West Point Road. CUC’s crews worked throughout the night and early morning occasionally battling extreme weather conditions to replace the damaged poles and restore service to customers. The final customers, which were in the immediate vicinity of the accident, had their electricity restored at 2:28 a.m.

Approximately 1,710 customers were initially affected. Customers regained service at various intervals throughout the night as CUC personnel worked diligently to safely restore service to all customers affected.

CUC greatly appreciates the assistance with traffic control provided by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) from the time the incident occurred until the restoration was completed.
CUC apologizes for the inconvenience this outage caused.
