Update: MVA at ORIA Yesterday, 17 July
This morning, 18 July, around 8:45AM, the female pedestrian victim in yesterday’s serious accident on Roberts Drive at ORIA succumbed to her injuries.
The woman had just arrived on island yesterday and was in the process of leaving the airport when she was struck by a taxi. Family members have consented to the release of her name at this time. She is Vary Anetta Jones-Leslie, age 62, of Jamaica.
The driver of the taxi, age 69 of Bodden Town, was treated at hospital yesterday and has been released.
The incident is under police investigation.
Correction: the first release indicated that the accident occurred at 10AM, more accurately, the accident occurred around 10:45AM.
Please also note the following quote from Commissioner of Police Derek Byrne as an addendum to the below releases on this incident:
“As an organization we are disturbed by the uploading and distribution of the image online yesterday morning of the victim at the scene,” said Commissioner of Police Derek Byrne. “It demonstrated a blatant disregard for the victim and her family, and I ask those who uploaded this photo to consider their own feelings if they were one of the victim’s relatives and saw this photo. As far as we are aware, the image has been taken down. There was no value in the uploading of the picture other than morbid curiosity. In this age of social media and immediate communication all of us have a duty to demonstrate common decency during tragic incidents.
We at the RCIPS would like to extend our condolences to her family for their tragic loss.”
