Cayman Islands Lions Club holds successful diabetes fair
Over 80 persons attended the fair and got an opportunity to meet with Dr. Rina Bernard (Chrissie Tomlinson Hospital) for free consultation. Simone Davis, a certified Diabetes Educator and Pharmacist from Professional Pharmacy and Kristen Lomas, a Certified Dietitian at Cayman Medical Clinic and a volunteer for the Cayman Diabetes Association were also in attendance and provided educational sessions on diabetes health and wellness. These speakers told the audience that they should strive towards a healthy lifestyle. This included eating healthy and workout and exercises.
Over 50 attendees received free A1C Testing which was sponsored by the Cayman Islands Diabetes Association (CIDA). Twenty of those tested received free glucose machines with five months’ supply of strips. These machines and strips were sponsored by Mr. Donald McLean of Cayman Medical Supplies.
According to the Committee Chair, Lion Jasmine Minott, “the Diabetes fair was a successful one, we were able to test a large number of people and in doing so were able to identify some new cases and refer them to the hospital”. She further noted that some persons were found to be pre-diabetic and were able to receive advice on how to deal with these results.
She also thanked the sponsors who supported event, Cayman Medical Supplies, CIDA, Nationwide Air Conditioning, Cayman Reporter and Cost U Less for providing the refreshment. She noted that the Fair was just another way of carrying out the President’s theme “With Passion and Willingness, We Serve for a Brighter Tomorrow”.
