Cayman Islands legislators learn about energy sustainability

Mr Winston C Connolly Jr MLAA trio of local legislators recently joined their peers from across the region at a workshop on sustainability, energy and development in Trinidad.

MLAs Winston Connolly, Bernie Bush and Arden McLean travelled to the Eastern Caribbean nation 7th-10th December 2015, for a four day workshop, hosted by the United Kingdom branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA UK) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The interactive sessions included a visit to the Savannah East Building which offers green office space in the heart of Port of Spain, the Trinidadian capital. Legislators also had a number of opportunities to share knowledge across national boundaries.

Among the topics on the agenda were energy security, financing for energy sustainability and cutting consumption. International experts from the Caribbean, the European Union and the United Nations led discussions.

Mr Bernie A Bush MLAAMcLeanCommenting on the visit Mr Connolly remarked: “The workshop was very informative. It showed me what our Parliamentary colleagues are doing in the region with respect to sustainable development and renewable energy. It also highlighted global warming internationally and why the Cayman Islands should be taking note in all these areas.”

“I was very happy to have attended on behalf of the Government and look forward to continuing the dialogue at home”, Mr Connolly added.

The regional workshop was the second in a series of three on the same topic that the CPA UK and UNDP are hosting in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean between November 2015 and January 2016.
