Cayman Islands government announces new chair for University

0009Cabinet appoints UCCI Board Members

On Tuesday 31 March 2015, Cabinet appointed the following persons to the UCCI Board of Governors:

• Lemuel Hurlston, CVO, MBE, JP – Chair
• Andrea Bryan – Deputy Chair
• Stephen Watler—Member

Mr Hurlston previously served the Government as Chief Secretary—the post now known as Deputy Governor. He retired from this position in 1995 but two years later became Managing Director of Montpelier Properties (Cayman Limited), a position that he still holds.
Over the years he has served in leadership positions on other public sector entities, such as the Water Authority and Work Permit Boards. He also recently chaired the Education Ministry’s Minimum Wage Advisory Committee, which delivered a comprehensive report to the Cabinet containing recommendations for a minimum wage regime for the Cayman Islands.
Asked to comment on his new role, Mr Hurlston remarked: “I deem this appointment a privilege and look forward to serving the needs of UCCI as a member of the Board of Governors and to the best of the Board’s combined ability.”
Andrea in Rotary Uniform 2009Deputy Chairman of the Board will be Ms Andrea Bryan, a UCCI Board member since October 2013. Ms Bryan began her career as an educator, but climbed the ranks of the CiviMeanwhile l Service, retiring from the post of Permanent Secretary (Chief Officer) in 2006.
Stephen Watler B&W.jpgMeanwhile Mr Stephen Watler, an attorney who specialises in investment funds, will serve on the board as the nominee of the Caymanian Bar Association. Presently an associate at the law firm Maples and Calder, he has worked in various international jurisdictions including London and Hong Kong. He is also a member of the Cayman Islands Law Society and the Law Society of England and Wales.
“I am grateful to our new board members for agreeing to take on this invaluable task on behalf of the people of the Cayman Islands, and to Ms. Bryan for her commitment to serve the Board in a new capacity”, stated Minister of Education, Hon. Tara Rivers.
In addition to the chair and deputy chair, membership of the UCCI Board of Governors includes representatives from the Ministries of Education and Finance, the legal profession, the information technology and telecommunications industries, the accounting sector, and the human resource profession. The President of UCCI is also a member by virtue of his office.
