Cayman Islands Girls’ Brigade Week – Fruitful and Overflowing

Girls’ Brigade International celebrates 125 years this year, of fruitful mission of impacting lives and enriching communities adopting the theme of “Fruitful and Overflowing”.  Locally the five member companies of the Cayman Islands Girls’ Brigade held their annual Girls’ Brigade week of activities and celebrations from Sunday 11thMarch until Saturday 17th March.   Early Sunday morning a large cohort of girls, young ladies and women gathered at the William Pouchie Memorial United Church to participate in the opening worship service to kick-start Girls’ Brigade week.  Lively songs were sung and Ms. Holly Miller a long term assistant with the North Side Girls’ Brigade Company was commissioned as an Officer/Lieutenant.

Throughout the week companies gathered together for spiritual uplifting, fun arts and crafts and physical activities and fellowship.  The Savannah and Bodden Town companies were hosted by North Side and the George Town Company was hosted by West Bay.

Midday Saturday all companies joined together at the Prospect Youth Centre for a half-day camp.  Registration and lunch were conducted as girls arrived.  A total of 100 girls aged 4 – 18 were present accompanied by 30 officers and assistants.  A hall decorated with fruitful vines, and empowering words such as love, peace, kindness, and self-control clad the walls and reinforced the theme.  Throughout the day special guest speakers were brought in to address different aspects of the theme. Ms. Joan Steer, Plant Protection Officer of the Department of Agriculture gave a great presentation entitled “watch me grow” which spoke to the plant lifecycle and each girl was given sunflower seeds to plant.  Ms. Carla Yee Sing, Personal Trainer and Bodybuilder presented a health and wellness presentation to the older girls on healthy food choices, healthy meal demonstrations followed by a short intense workout session.  Teambuilding activities and a beauty and skincare demonstration were also highlights of the day.

The day’s activities came to a close with a ceremonial balloon release on the beach where girls wrote messages and words of encouragement of what Girls’ Brigade meant to them with parents and guardians in attendance for a light supper and fellowship.
