MAY 26: Two Officers Violently Assaulted During Response to Burglary-in-Progress Yesterday, 25 May

Yesterday just after 12PM the 9-1-1 Communications Centre dispatched two officers to a report of a burglary-in-progress at a residence on Mangrove Avenue in George Town.  When they arrived the residents informed them that a man had gained entry through the back door of their home; when he was spotted by the residents he ran out of the house and jumped the fence and left in a reddish Honda Accord. The residents also provided officers with the registration number of that vehicle.

Officers made checks nearby and found a man and vehicle answering the description given on Dogwood Close. Officers informed the man of the allegations against him and that he was under arrest on suspicion of burglary. As one officer was applying handcuffs to the man he suddenly became combative and a violently resisted arrest, punching the arresting officer, knocking him to the ground, and kicking him repeatedly in the face, chest and head. The second officer intervened and was also kicked in her stomach repeatedly while trying to subdue him. The man then ran but was apprehended by the officers a few meters away and arrested.

The man, age 21 of George Town, is in Police custody.

Both officers received injuries and were taken to hospital. Of greatest concern is a serious injury that the arresting officer received to his eye.  The officer is traveling to Miami for emergency surgery.  The second officer sustained a serious sprain to her wrist and bruises to her stomach, and was treated and released.

“All of us today are thinking of our colleagues and are a bit stunned by the viciousness of the assault against them,” said Derek Byrne, Commissioner of Police, “of course we accept that the nature of our job entails danger at times, but this should never be allowed to become a regular occurrence or to escalate to such a level.  I am alarmed by this incident and the ones that have preceded it.”

Yesterday, 24 May, around 1:40PM a woman walking along Crewe Road reported that a man driving a black Honda pulled out of Belmont Close and drove slowly alongside her, making suggestive remarks.  The woman tried to ignore the man and went into the nearby mini mart.  When she left the mini mart the man was waiting outside in the Honda and continued to follow her, making crude remarks.  At one point he exposed himself to her, then attempted to block her path with the car while making threats to pull her into the vehicle.
