Threadpainting in the Garage!

When my nephew Kial was about two years old, hard as he tried he could not call me Auntie Merle like the others. An emotional and frustrating thing for him he named me “AMO”, which delightfully sticks with me today as ever so nice, as of course it is Latin, meaning, I love you!

Amo’s Art began in 1997 with my first piece. By that time for some years however, I was doing a lot of other arts and crafts displaying them in the window of my travel agency, and I had become known via the Caymanian Compass of the time as “The Doll Lady of Cayman”. My gorgeous handmade rag dolls, in particular, though much more sophisticated than ever so loveable rag dolls, had become famous! They were done in very personalized manner becoming heirlooms for new born girls, and for other special occasions; and good demand as home décor! I am proud that today, many of my clients still praise me for those creations which after more than 20 years they still have and love. Yes, I still do the dolls occasionally at a cost of about CI$150.00, and Fat Dolly may be making a comeback soon.

My first One Man show was at Grand Old House in November 1998. My cousins Sharon Hurlstone (of Blessed Memory), with Naul Bodden, were totally delighted to sponsor that very beautiful and successful evening. Among my distinguished guests was a surprise appearance of Miss Lassie whom I now honour at this time, like my Patron. From there my threadpaintings over the years have quietly spread as far as Israel, and other places, including a number of homes right here in Cayman, and The Gazebo at Grand Old House itself.

In this process, my road to growth, over the years, I discovered that I am ONE, of only four published or known Thread-painting artists in the entire North/Central/South American and the Caribbean region. Of course I understand this; my work not only very rare, is totally time consuming, difficult, full focus production and a dedication that will last a lifetime, and like enduring tapestry, long after I am gone. One very encouraging investment to my clients is that the value on my work increases with time and ownership usually doubling in price once it leaves my hands, and increasing in this way of hand to hand ownership. So the Return on Investment is 100% from the first ownership, making purchase of my work an excellent unfailing investment.

As the story goes and from my work you will see, I began with a vision in Hawaii many years ago. I have been on a long pause from the work, as with the load, I had developed bursitis in my shoulders; over use as the doctor defines, from the constant movement. This was severely painful and after some time it has eased and I’ve learnt to overcome the body’s demand to stop at the first signs of hurt. My work comes to fruition when the juices flow in common artist’s expression.
