Cayman Islands delegation arrives in Hong Kong

Premier Alden Mclaughlin and the Cayman delegation is in Hong Kong at the invitation of the UK Government to participate in the UK’s GREAT Festival of Innovation that takes place this week.

Attending with Premier McLaughlin is Ministers Hon. Joey Hew, Hon. Tara Rivers, and Hon. Dwayne Seymour, their support staff as well as representatives from the private sector including Cayman Finance, The Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce and Cayman Islands Health City.  The delegation arrived in Hong King on Monday afternoon.

Premier Alden McLaughlin said “The GREAT Festival gives us the opportunity to support the Cayman financial services firms in Hong Kong as well as highlight Cayman’s strengths in financial services.  Taking advantage of this invitation by the UK Government to attend the Festival provides us with the opportunity to support this sector as well as support the UK directly.

On Tuesday morning Hon. Tara Rivers, Minister for Financial Services and Dr. Dax Basdeo, Chief Officer attended a roundtable discussion with representatives of the financial services industry in Hong Kong who often utilise Cayman products to further their clients’ business needs. The two and a half hour meeting was chaired by Jude Scott, CEO, Cayman Finance.

Hon. Minister Tara Rivers said, “The meeting was extremely useful as it allowed for a discussion on the tremendous opportunities for financial services firms pursuing business in China.  We also discussed some of the key challenges faced by some firms in promoting and using Cayman products. Cayman has a strong reputation in this market, and we certainly see that there is a wealth of opportunity to further develop the Cayman brand.   As the Minister responsible for Financial Services it is important that we attend this festival and speak directly with the financial service providers and clients in as many forums as possible.”

On Tuesday evening Premier McLaughlin and the Ministers attended a GREAT Festival private reception which was hosted by the UK Consular General at his residence.  In attendance at the reception was Rt. Hon. Liam Fox, Secretary of State for International Trade as well as Baroness Fairhead, Minister of State for Trade and Export Promotion at the Department for International Trade.

The GREAT Festival opens on Wednesday morning with a keynote address by Rt. Hon Liam Fox.  He’ll introduce the themes and ambitions of this unique international event and explore the enduring and interconnected relationship between the region, the UK and other parts of the world.
