Cayman Islands: Caymanian Bar Association 27th Anniversary Gala

CBA-300x129The Caymanian Bar Association (CBA) held its 27th Anniversary Gala on 12 September 2015 at the Marriott Hotel.

Winston Connolly MLA and past Council Member of the CBA was the master of ceremonies for the evening. With over 170 guests in attendance representing members from the CBA, the Cayman Islands Law Society, the Judiciary, the Premier and other Members of the Legislative Assembly, the event was one of the largest ever held by the CBA. During the evening the fifteen Caymanians who were admitted as attorneys in 2014 were honoured and presented with awards by the Honourable Premier Alden McLaughlin MBE.

Abraham Thoppil, President of the CBA, welcomed the new entrants into the legal profession. “With over 220 Caymanian attorneys as members of the CBA, the association now represents roughly one-third of the legal profession in the Cayman Islands”, said Mr. Thoppil.

The Honourable Justice Ingrid Mangatal, the keynote speaker for the evening, delivered an insightful speech on the proposed modernisation of the Legal Practitioners Law, which included both her views and certain views of the Judiciary.

About the Caymanian Bar Association
The Caymanian Bar Association was established in 1988 after senior Caymanian attorneys perceived the need for an organisation to address issues of particular relevance to Caymanian attorneys and effectively to represent the views of Caymanian attorneys who were, and are, a minority in the profession in the Cayman Islands.

To that end all Caymanians, as defined in the Immigration Law (2014 Revision), who are admitted to practise as an attorney in the Cayman Islands and possess a current practising certificate, are eligible to be members of the CBA.

Most Caymanian attorneys who are eligible have joined the CBA, and the organisation currently represents the interests of over 220 Caymanian attorneys. The CBA also has a Student Chapter with over 100 honorary student members comprised of Caymanian law students and articled clerks.
