Cayman: International Women’s Day Message from Premier O’Connor-Connolly

Today, I stand united with women across our Islands and around the world in commemorating International Women’s Day, 2025. This year’s theme, ‘Accelerate Action,’ serves as a powerful reminder that while we have made meaningful strides towards gender equality, there is still much work to be done.
The history of our beloved Islands is rich with the contributions of remarkable women who shaped our society. The wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters of our nation who laid the foundation for our government, education system, church communities and so much more. Women like our newest National Hero, Honourable Francine Jackson, who along with others charted the course and made it possible for women to vote and run for elected office.
I am truly humbled that I stand on the shoulders of many of these women who paved the way for me to become the first female Premier of the Cayman Islands.
The importance of women’s participation in politics cannot be overstated. When women are able to sit at the decision-making table, policies are more inclusive and reflective of our diverse society. Women’s representation in government leads to more effective public services and infrastructure development, as well as improved governance and focus on issues such as healthcare, education, and social welfare, all of which affect the most vulnerable in our society.
As a woman in leadership, I understand the importance of fostering an environment where all women and girls have the opportunity to thrive, freely contribute their thoughts on the issues that affect them, and lead without bias or limitation. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that we continue breaking down barriers, championing equal opportunities, and creating a future where diversity is embraced and valued.
On this very special day, I encourage everyone, women and men alike, to celebrate the achievements of the women in our lives, to raise awareness and take bold steps towards a more equitable and inclusive world.
Together, through our actions and our unwavering commitment, we can and will accelerate progress for the generations to come.
I wish for you a peaceful and blessed International Women’s Day.
