Small fire at Landfill/FURTHER UPDATE

FURTHER UPDATE (Sun May 10)

The Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) maintained a watching brief overnight at the George Town landfill site following a small fire discovered on Friday, 8 May.

Crews from CIFS and the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) made good progress yesterday (Saturday, 9 May) excavating and damping down the affected area. No smoke or fire is now evident at the scene.

The site was handed back to DEH this morning. The duty crew from Central Fire Station will make periodic checks throughout today for reassurance.

Landfill Fire Under Control

Crews from the Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) continued to damp down a small fire at the George Town landfill site overnight with no visible signs of smoke this morning (Saturday, 9 May).

Crews from the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) will continue to assist with excavating the area in order to locate the deep seated pocket of fire. Further damping down will take place today to ensure full extinguishment and reduce chance of any re-ignition.

Speaking about the incident, Chief Fire Officer, Paul Walker QFSM said “Our fire strategy for early notification and attendance has worked extremely well in this instance with very little or no impact at all to surrounding residents and businesses. We would like to thank DEH for their continued cooperation and collaboration on this matter.”

CAYMAN ISLANDS (GIS) – The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) reports a small but deep-seated fire at the top of the George Town Landfill, discovered this afternoon (Friday, 8 May 2020) at around 4.10 p.m.

DEH reports the Cayman Islands Fire Service is on scene, and the fire is relatively under control but issuing light smoke.

Additional updates will be shared with the public as information becomes available.

Collision involving cyclist

Shortly before 11:30AM today, 8 May, officers responded to a report of a traffic collision at the intersection of Hirst Road and the East West Arterial involving a Jeep and a bicycle. The bicycle had been travelling along the East West Arterial and the Jeep had been travelling north along Hirst Road, when they collided.

Emergency services attended the location and the cyclist was transported to the Cayman Islands Hospital for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Jeep was uninjured.

The matter is currently under investigation.
