Cayman: EDWARD & MAIN STREETS NOW OPEN FOLLOWING COMPLETION OF PAVING A RE-STRIPING

George Town, Grand Cayman – 17 February 2025 – The Ministry of Planning, Agriculture, Housing, Infrastructure, Transport & Development (PAHITD), in collaboration with the George Town Revitalisation Initiative (GTRI), is pleased to announce that Edward and Main Streets have officially reopened today, Monday, 17 February 2025, following the completion of paving and restriping works on Sunday, 16 February 2025.
This milestone marks the near completion of the George Town Revitalisation Initiative’s ongoing improvements, enhancing road safety, traffic flow, and pedestrian accessibility in the capital.
Project Completion & Delay Due to Tsunami Warning
The roadworks, originally scheduled for completion the weekend of February 8-9th, were delayed due to a tsunami warning, which required emergency preparedness measures and the postponement of all scheduled construction. Once conditions allowed, work resumed, and the final paving and re striping were completed on February 16, enabling the safe reopening of roads today
Final Road Enhancements & Traffic Adjustments
Edward Street Re-pavement & Re-striping – The road has been fully resurfaced, improving durability, safety, and traffic efficiency.
Phased Reopening of Edward and Main Streets – Traffic has resumed in stages, ensuring a smooth transition to the improved roadway layout.
Main Street Reverts to One-Way – To maintain pedestrian-friendly enhancements and improve traffic movement, Main Street will remain a one-way street.
Utility Pole Removal & Future Enhancements – Additional traffic flow improvements will take place following the planned removal of utility poles at the Shedden Road/Main Street and Edward Street/Shedden Road intersections.
A Commitment to a Modernised George Town
The Ministry of PAHITD and GTRI appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation throughout this project.
