Cayman: CIBC FIRSTCARIBBEAN’S WALK returns for its ninth year

George Town, Cayman Islands, 1, October 2020 – Raising in excess of KYD $70,000 towards the Cayman Islands Cancer Society, the CIBC FirstCaribbean’s Walk for the Cure will host over 300 participants on Sunday, 4, October 2020.

The 5K walk or run will gather at Public Beach at 6:00a.m., for a start time of 6:30 a.m. The walk is the only actual one taking place across the bank’s regional footprint this year as a result of the impact of Covid-19. The effects of the pandemic in the Cayman Islands have not been as severe as in other territories thus leading to the staging of the walk.

Elsewhere across the region, thousands are expected to tune in from 4pm to 7p.m. for the bank’s Virtual Walk for the Cure and Concert of Hope, which has replaced the walks in the other 15 territories. The event will be streamed on all of the bank’s social media pages as well as via zoom and broadcast on Caribvision.

It will feature a line-up of top regional performers as well as energetic fitness sessions.

Executive co-chair and the bank’s Managing Director, Wealth Management Dan Wright noted that due to the pandemic this would be the first event of 2020 for the Cayman Islands Cancer Society. Celebrating its 25th year, the care organization will still receive significant support from businesses and the public.

“I am overwhelmed by the spirit & generosity of the Cayman community as we come together to raise money for a disease that touches us all and does not go away because of a pandemic.  Because of the commitment and resilience of the Cayman community, we are extremely fortunate to be able to host this great event again live. Our sponsors, volunteers and community have all risen to the challenge,” he noted.

This is the ninth year for the walk which takes place across the bank’s 16-member footprint and has raised over USD$2.7 million over the past eight years.

The funds generated from the walk are used primarily to assist with the purchase and maintenance of equipment used in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients.

They are also used to provide assistance, care and counselling to patients and their families as well as to raise awareness, and stress the importance of early detection, through education campaigns across the region.
