Cayman Brac Spring Weekend ’17 – countdown begins

Cayman Brac teenagers and young adults are in for a lively weekend of youth forums, drone racing, basketball and football on Friday, 10 to Sunday, 12 March 2017.

The activity-filled days of free events are being organised by the Youth Services Unit of the Ministry of Community Affairs, Youth & Sports.

The Unit’s Acting Head, James Myles, said “The Brac Spring Weekend is to empower young people in the Brac to participate and advocate for their community.”

“Its main goals are to encourage attendance to its two youth forums: One for high school students and the other a breakfast forum for 17 to 25 year olds to gather and dialogue,”

“We’re very excited by the feedback we’ve been getting about all the events we’ve planned and expect a strong turnout,” he added.

Brac Spring Weekend ’17 kicks off with the Brac Youth Forum at 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Friday 10th at the Layman E. Scott High School. Hosted jointly by the Cayman Islands Youth Assembly, the interactive session will encourage teenagers to discuss topics of interest as they relate to them and the community.

A 3/3 basketball tournament will be held Friday from 7.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m., at the high school’s basketball courts. Teams will get the chance to show off their skills with the winners earning prizes and a year’s bragging rights.

On Saturday, young people are invited to watch a drone racing exhibition on the Playfield. Flown by trained individuals, the racing will start at noon. Later that day the Brac Spring Weekend will host a scavenger hunt. Starting at the Bluff Playfield at 1 p.m., the all-island hunt, hosted with help of the Cayman Islands Scouts, will test participants’ tracking and clue-interpreting skills.

The Kickball Competition, which is open to all ages and skill levels, will take place at the Bluff Playfield at 4 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by the Koalition Dance Group. Following the kickball competition Cayman Brac FC will play Academy FC in an U13 match. To round off the day, a Half-Line Kick-Off Competition will take place during the half-time of the Cayman Islands Football Association’s Division 1 match between Cayman Brac and North Side.

Food and non-alcoholic drinks will be on sale at some of the events with the proceeds going towards helping the local community.

Brac Spring Weekend ‘17 closes out, Sunday, 12 March, with a Young Adult Breakfast Forum at the Cayman Brac Beach Resort, 8.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m.Free for young adults aged 17 to 25 years old, the breakfast discussion will encourage attendees’ to speak about topics of mutual interest.
