Caribbean’s Northern Lights

Discover the Caribbean’s Answer to the Northern Lights

From Luxury Travel Magazine

The Northern Lights has long been recognized as one of the world’s most famed astronomical phenomena, however a lesser-known Green Flash that can be seen on the Caribbean island of Bequia has become a bucket-list activity for visitors to the region.

The Liming Hotel, set to open on Bequia this November, is shining a light on the best way to view the island’s greatest secret by celebrating the Green Flash as the perfect way to kick off an evening of stargazing.

The region has already established itself as a stargazing hotspot thanks to low levels of light pollution offering clear views of the night sky.

The elusive yet spectacular Green Flash is loved by locals and can be seen at sunset on the clear horizon. As the sun sets and the very last view drops beneath the horizon, a flash of green light is visible from Bequia. The optical phenomenon has sparked interest in visitors to the islands for a number of years.

Known as the Island of Clouds, visitor numbers to Bequia have increased over the past year according to the Annual Tourism Statistical report from The St. Vincent and The Grenadines Tourism Authority (SVGTA).

Natasha Anderson, SVGTA Marketing Officer for Europe, said: “Despite being the second largest land mass in the multi-island destination of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), Bequia is home to less than 5,000 residents. It has a diverse blend of bars, restaurants, and is the backdrop for a major music festival held in January and a flourishing Easter regatta. Bequia is a leading destination within SVG and its sustained popularity is encouraged by its idyllic charm, scenic beaches and welcoming residents.”

The Liming Hotel, which opens in November, will offer guests spectacular views of the island’s enviable sunsets, sunrises and night sky with its seafront position.

Lewis Scrimgeour, General Manager, The Liming, said: “We can’t wait to welcome guests to The Liming and show off the island’s spectacular scenery. We’ve been lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the Green Flash while work is underway for the hotel’s opening and it truly is spectacular. It’s the island’s best kept secret and one that we can’t wait to share with visitors.

“Our proximity to the sea front will offer guest’s unrivaled views stretching over the horizon, and our new restaurant and dining area which will be built out over the ocean will be the perfect place for stargazers to relax beneath the night sky.”

Reached by air or sea, Bequia’s closest connecting islands are St Vincent, St Lucia and Barbados. Prices per night start from $550 for a Junior Suite on a bed and breakfast basis for two people sharing.
