Canadian porn actor murder suspect makes second appearance in Montreal court

Luka Rocco Magnotta made an appearance at the Montreal courthouse Thursday as his lawyer set a March 2013 date for his client’s preliminary hearing and raised concerns about Magnotta’s mental and physical well-being.

Magnotta is being represented by Luc Leclair from Toronto. Magnotta is requesting a trial by judge and jury, his lawyer said.

The court appearance lasted less than 10 minutes.

As Magnotta looked on from behind a glassed-in security area at the Montreal courthouse, handcuffed and in a plaid shirt and dark pants, Leclair requested his client get his medication while at the Riviere des Prairies prison. The prosecution requested a publication ban on the type of medication Magnotta was taking, which the judge agreed with.

Magnotta was repatriated to Canada from Germany this week aboard a Canadian military jet after he was captured at a Berlin Internet café. He was brought home after the biggest manhunt in Montreal police history.

He is facing five charges, including first degree murder, for a crime that grabbed international headlines.

He is alleged to have killed and dismembered Lin, a Chinese foreign student, mailed his body parts to political parties in Ottawa and schools in Vancouver and posted a video on an online gore web site before fleeing the country.
